Choosing one
- Mirrored HDD (RAID 1): two copies of every block, so one failed disk does not lose data. Good for backup targets and archives.
- SSD plus bulk HDD: the system runs on the SSD, data lives on the large disk. Good for media and file storage where speed matters less than capacity.
- Large NVMe: for storage that is also busy, such as databases, search indexes or high-traffic downloads. Pair with a 10 Gbps port where offered.
RAID is not a backup
A mirror protects against a failed disk, not against deletion, ransomware or a bad update. On Essential Managed we keep nightly offsite backups of 100 GB with 14-day retention, and extra offsite space is $10/mo per 100 GB. Unmanaged servers can use any backup tool you like.
Using it as an offsite target
Common setups are restic, Borg or rsync over SSH, or an S3-compatible service such as MinIO. Transfer into the server is not counted; restores out of it count against the server's monthly transfer.
